Windthrow Earrings
Windthrow Earrings
"Windthrow" These earrings were created as part of a collection for a hurricane Fiona themed gallery installation. Also available from the collection- "Years in Days" Pendant. "Still Standing" Cuff. "I(t) came. I saw(ed). I Conquered" Ring.
Windthrow is a term for when high winds topple trees leaving them on the ground with the root balls sticking up.
In the fall of 2022 Prince Edward Island was hit by a major hurricane. The hurricane (Fiona) felled tens of thousands of trees across the island. We lost hundreds on our property alone. One of the trees that came down was a Hawthorn tree. That tree was my inspiration for these earrings.
The top domes were created by casting sterling silver in Cuttlefish bone (an ancient metal-smithing technique), the thorns are set in copper "root balls". As with all of my work, everything was created by hand.
Tree thorns from a Hawthorn tree, copper and sterling silver.
